Skills needed for making artisan furniture!

Making Artisan Furniture requires a sharp eye to select the highest quality timber – you need to discover the best timber suppliers in your area and be prepared to spend time to find exactly the right wood for the piece/s you’re going to make. Never compromise!

You must be emotionally attached to each piece you are going to make. Without this attachment, you won’t give it your best but with it, you will be able to make a beautiful piece of furniture that will be cherished for ever

To make the best crafted furniture, you need to be a perfectionist and have an eye for detail. You will never be satisfied until and unless you know it’s the best

Patience is needed at all stages but never more so than when making preparations for finishing each item – ensuring there are no unwanted stains or blemishes – and giving due consideration to ensure the item is perfect

If you haven’t designed the piece of furniture yourself, you must still be creative enough to imagine how it will look when finished and have the technical skills to follow the drawing/s

Its all about the Console table!

I was asked by several clients to make a stylish console table so set about designing one that had a simple but elegant design.

Its simplicity belies its complex design. In fact, the attention to detail is even more important because there’s nowhere to hide.

The art of making this piece is in the cutting of the timber which must be precise and clean. Of course, the quality of the timber itself is of the utmost importance and I always make sure that I source the finest ebony Macassar. I wanted to use this wood because of its uniqueness and special exotic quality, making it an item of luxury that would enhance my clients’ homes and be the envy of their visitors!

Having sourced the wood, I set about making sure that each piece of the timber is the same colour throughout the manufacture of each console table.

As it’s designed to be a luxury item of furniture, it is imperative to get the alignment of the legs to the table top perfect and to make sure the cutting of the edges is similarly flawless. I use a special bevel to get the correct shape for the legs – they aren’t straight as they might seem on first sight. The table is finished with a special lacquer to protect it from scratches and stains.

All this takes time and patience – this is something I’ve learned and honed over the years of making my furniture. When I tell people that the table is “lovingly handmade”, this is the complete truth. Without the love and care that a true craftsman or woman puts into making each piece, it will never be quite perfect.

What is Contemporary Design ?

I’m often asked about different types of design so I thought I’d give a brief description about the styles and designs that I get asked about most. These days, almost all our commissions are for contemporary furniture. But what is it and what defines it from say modern furniture? Dictionary definition of CONTEMPORARY is: belonging to or occurring in the present. Dictionary definition of Design is: the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object. Put together, Contemporary design of furniture means that it is ever changing, it’s of the moment and is a living, breathing entity. Compare this to Modern design which refers to a period of time, which doesn’t change, it is a defined style, and will remain such for ever.

What then constitutes current contemporary design? Each item of furniture has a clean line, is slim and uses a combination of materials – put together to add beauty to whatever space they are used for. Take this floor lamp for example:

Each block is made from solid beech and is screwed together with special hardware. The wood itself is ecologically and sustainably sourced – very important to today’s discerning customer. The filament lightbulb is similarly eco-friendly. Many homes have a combination of styles and when well-thought out, contemporary pieces of furniture sit well with more traditional items.
